March Newsletter

Greetings from Balance

You're invited to our 30th anniversary Gala Celebration on May 19th from 5:30-8pm at the Watermark at Shully's in Thiensville!

Dine, mingle, and raise a glass to raise funds for our Adult Family Homes.

Enjoy live music, gourmet dinner, wine selection, decadent dessert and an inspiring program, all while supporting Balance’s mission to support the independence of individuals with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities.

Through Balance's 30-years of dedication we have been able to give families peace of mind in knowing that their loved one has a happy home where they can live as full and independent a life as possible.

Balance currently owns eight Adult Family Homes (AFH) throughout Northern Ozaukee County, providing a safe, medically attentive and enjoyable living arrangement for 25 adults ages 21 and up.

One hundred percent of our AFH residents are Family Care members, meaning that they all have a household income below the poverty level. Once allocated, the Family Care dollars are non-negotiable and can only be used to provide care to the resident, meet their basic needs and pay utilities.

Balance is, therefore, completely responsible for repairs and upkeep of the homes and property. We hope that our homes blend in with the surrounding neighborhoods and stay well above city codes and ADA Standards for Accessible Design.

Maintaining these homes is extremely important and costly. Funds raised through our "No Place Like Home" Gala will go directly toward our Adult Family Homes, with our goal of raising $130,000.

Please join us in creating a network of support that will last generations to come.

Kapco Metal Stamping

and Tom Stanton of Mel's Charities

MODAHLS

In 1988, Craig and Sandy Modahl were working at a local group home for individuals with developmental disabilities. They developed a relationship with one of the residents, Kevin, who grew up at one of the state institutions. They invited him to become a part of their home and he remained part of their family until he died in 2013. A couple of years after Kevin joined the family, they invited another man into their home whose caregiver had died. The Modahls continued to open up their arms and their home over the years. These acts of love, compassion, and humility were the impetus for the founding of Balance in 1991. As a non-profit agency, Balance has remained dedicated to balancing support and independence for individuals with developmental disabilities throughout the life continuum.

Kapco Metal Stamping

Kapco’s “pay it forward” approach to philanthropy makes an indelible impact on more and more lives every year. Ultimately, Kapco is teaching the entire community the value of giving. As a company they have embraced the opportunity to make life better for those in need and continue to provide support to a growing number of local non-profit organizations, including Balance. From a humble start in 1972, Kapco’s philanthropic commitment continually reinforces their sincere mission to help shape our community for the better.

Tom Stanton

Tom Stanton founded Mel's Charities 24 year ago with a personal commitment to impact lives in Ozaukee County, exemplified in Mel’s Charities slogan,

“What We Raise Here, Stays Here.”

In 2021 alone, Mel’s Charities provided grants totaling over $232,000 to Ozaukee County organizations serving the IDD community, human services, and memorials. What began as a $350 gift by passing the hat among friends in 1999 has exceeded $1.6 million in total grants.

Looking back on our 30 year history we found a few gems we would like to share! Can you recognize these faces?
