Success story: “It might seem like no big deal…”

Success can be measured in so many ways and some of those ways might pass us by in the blink of an eye. Some of those successes might look small from the outside but they are tremendous leaps to those who know the individual the best. Moms and Dads and guardians can tell it the best, so here is a moment out of everyday life shared by the mother of Vinny who is growing 11-year-old boy who is autistic and has been a Balance participant for 6 years.

"Waiting for the bus. This dude now gets picked up at the corner. Might sound like NBD it's literally one house away. BUT he has to cross the street and wait at an intersection. As well he gets dropped off across the street at the intersection. Yesterday I watched from the windows as he got off the bus, watched the bus drive away, walked to our driveway looking left/right/left and letting a car cross in front of him then he walked across the street to our driveway. Again might sound like NBD but this kid would walk into traffic just a few years ago so for this mom THIS IS BIG!! He has gained so much independence these past few years and I'm so proud. I just love this kid so damn much!!!" - Erin Calfa Weide talking about her son Vinny who has participated in Balance Children's programs for the past 6 years.
